Taraz Brings Together Artisans, Designers, and Guests from Around the World
Unique handcrafted works were presented by artisans from various countries at the international festival “Taraz – City of Craftsmen”, held on the территории of the historical and cultural complex “Kone Taraz.” The large-scale event transformed the venue into a unique platform where tradition, history, and contemporary art intertwined.

A festive atmosphere could be felt right from the entrance. Guests were welcomed by girls in traditional costumes offering national treats — seven types of dishes symbolizing the generosity of the Kazakh dastarkhan, prosperity, and respect for guests. This warm reception became a vivid embodiment of centuries-old traditions of hospitality.
The opening ceremony featured congratulatory remarks from the Akim of the Zhambyl region, Yerbol Karashukeyev, who welcomed residents and visitors of Taraz.
“Taraz is not just an ancient city. It is a sacred place that has preserved the imprint of time and has become a spiritual foundation of human civilization along the Great Silk Road. With a history spanning more than two thousand years, it has united different peoples, forming a continuous thread of art and tradition. Therefore, Taraz is a chronicle of history, a cultural heritage, and the spirit of a multi-voiced city of craftsmen,” the regional head noted.
He also emphasized that the inclusion of the city in the global network of craft cities is a significant achievement reflecting international recognition of Kazakhstan’s applied arts.
“Today’s festival creates a special cultural space where tradition and modernity harmoniously coexist. Each work carries the imprint of history, and every ornament reflects the soul of the people,” said Yerbol Karashukeyev, highlighting the practical importance of the festival.
“The festival contributes to tourism development, opens new opportunities for entrepreneurship, strengthens cultural ties, and, most importantly, fosters interest in national art among the younger generation,” he added.
The head of the region wished the participants inspiration and creative success.
Congratulatory speeches were also delivered by Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Malik Otarbayev, Mazhilis deputy Guldara Nurumova, and President of the public association “Union of Ethno-Designers of Kazakhstan,” member of the World Crafts Council Saltanat Zhaparova. The speakers emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage, supporting artisans, and developing ethno-design in modern conditions.
“The festival ‘Taraz – City of Craftsmen’ is a significant event for the entire country, aimed at preserving and developing traditional applied arts and strengthening cultural ties between nations. As an ancient center of crafts on the Great Silk Road, Taraz rightfully brings together masters and traditions, becoming an important platform for dialogue between the past and the present. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly emphasized the special role of preserving cultural heritage and supporting national art as one of the priorities of state policy. I am confident that the festival will become an effective platform for exchanging experience, strengthening creative ties, developing ethno-design, and engaging young people with our rich cultural heritage. I wish all participants inspiration, new achievements, and continued success!” said Malik Otarbayev.
The event gained special significance from the fact that since 2022 Taraz has held the honorary status of the first city in Kazakhstan included in the list of World Craft Cities. This status is a recognition of the region’s rich cultural heritage and the high level of development of decorative and applied arts.
During the ceremony, artisans who made significant contributions to the development of decorative and applied arts were honored. Their work is a living continuation of traditions and an essential part of the country’s cultural identity.
The festival continued with a vibrant концерт program, followed by a fashion show featuring collections by contemporary designers, where national motifs were organically combined with modern trends. The presented works demonstrated how traditional ornaments and forms can gain new expression in the modern fashion industry.
